Subject: Horizontal "scratch" lines in transparent object

Recently I rendered an anim of a glass prism. As I had read in a tutorial
on refraction, I created double sided polygons; I copied the object,
flipped the surface normals and pasted into the original object, then I
merged points.
Should I have merged points?
The results I got were horizontal lines which sort of looked like
scratches on the glass, but obviously didn't follow the contours of my
object. (They were only horizontal) And the object seemed to flicker wildly.
Later, since I had decided not to even use refraction, I made the object
single sided and didn't seem to get this problem.
